Syracuse, New York – Strong winds up to 60 mph are expected to lash parts of central New York through 2 p.m. Wednesday, prompting a Severe Thunderstorm Warning from the National Weather Service in Buffalo.

According to the NWS, the storm was spotted near Montezuma at 1:02 p.m., tracking northeast at 40 mph with radar indicating damaging wind gusts. The warning covers southeastern Wayne County, Cayuga County, and southwestern Oswego County.

Communities in the storm’s path include Fulton, Weedsport, Cato, Sterling, and Minetto. Interstate 90 near exit 40 is also within the impact zone. Residents should expect possible damage to roofs, siding, and trees, and are urged to shelter indoors on the lowest floor of a sturdy building.

Winds this strong can down power lines, reduce visibility for drivers, and cause localized outages. If you’re in the warning area, avoid non-essential travel until the storm passes.

The thunderstorm warning remains active until 2 p.m., and additional alerts may follow if conditions worsen.
