Syracuse, New York – Lake effect snow showers will continue through tonight, bringing up to 6 inches of accumulation along the I-81 corridor before tapering Thursday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 8 a.m. Thursday for Onondaga, Madison, Cortland, Tompkins, Oneida, and Cayuga counties.
Forecasters say lake effect snow showers will develop throughout the day east of Lake Ontario, impacting the Tug Hill region and portions of the Mohawk Valley before expanding south into the Finger Lakes and Southern Tier. The most numerous snow showers are expected this afternoon and tonight, with isolated snow squalls possible.
Snowfall totals through Thursday morning are projected at 4 to 6 inches near Syracuse and parts of Tug Hill, 3 to 4 inches around Cortland and Auburn, and 2 to 3 inches in Ithaca and Binghamton. Localized higher amounts cannot be ruled out where heavier bands persist.
Drivers along Interstate 81 from Syracuse through Cortland and Binghamton, Interstate 90 near Auburn, and NY-13 through Ithaca should prepare for snow-covered roads, brief heavy bursts of snow, and rapidly changing visibility.
High temperatures today will reach the low to mid-30s, but steady snowfall rates may allow accumulation on untreated surfaces.
Commuters, school districts, and delivery drivers should allow extra travel time, particularly during evening hours when snow coverage may increase.
Snow showers are expected to diminish Thursday morning.
