Syracuse, New York – Light snow and falling temperatures are creating slick travel conditions across the Syracuse area Thursday morning as colder Arctic air moves into Central New York.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, rain changed to snow around sunrise Thursday, with light snow showers continuing through the morning hours. As colder air deepens, snow is expected to transition to lake-effect snow and persist into Friday morning, especially near and north of the Interstate 90 corridor.

Snowfall totals through Friday morning are expected to range from 1 to 3 inches across the Syracuse area, with locally higher amounts possible in lake-effect bands north of the city. Forecasters note that snowfall intensity will remain light, but temperatures falling into the mid-teens to upper 20s will allow wet roads and sidewalks to freeze quickly, increasing the risk of icy conditions.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 1 p.m. Friday for Onondaga County, along with much of the Finger Lakes region, including Madison and Oneida counties. The advisory highlights the potential for slippery road conditions during the morning and evening commutes.

Daytime highs Thursday are expected to remain in the upper teens to mid-20s, with colder air continuing to settle in tonight. Snow showers are forecast to gradually taper Friday morning, though lake-effect flurries may linger into the afternoon.

The National Weather Service advises drivers to use caution, especially on untreated roads, bridges, and elevated surfaces where ice may form quickly.

Commuters, students, and early-morning travelers in the Syracuse area should plan for slower travel speeds and longer commute times due to snow-covered and icy roadways.
