Syracuse, NY – Lake effect snow continues to impact Syracuse and surrounding parts of Central New York on Monday, creating a cold and wintry start to the week with slick travel conditions in several counties.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, Monday, December 15, features ongoing lake effect snow bands, with steadier snowfall expected to move through the Syracuse area between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. Forecasters say an additional 1 to 3 inches of snow is possible in advisory areas, including portions of Onondaga County.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Onondaga County until 1 p.m. Monday, while southern Cayuga County saw its advisory expire earlier in the morning. Snow showers and lighter dustings may still occur outside the main lake effect band, including areas toward Cortland, Auburn, and Oneida County.

Temperatures Monday morning are starting in the single digits to mid-teens, with wind chills making it feel even colder at times. While snowfall rates are not expected to be extreme, visibility may drop quickly under heavier lake effect bands, especially during the late-morning commute window.

Forecasters note the lake effect snow should gradually lift northward through the afternoon, shifting into northwest Oneida County before weakening and exiting the region by sunset. Snow is expected to stay mainly north of the area Monday night into Tuesday morning.

Roads may become snow covered and slippery at times, particularly on secondary streets and untreated surfaces. Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions.

By Tuesday, lake effect snow should diminish, with quieter but still cold conditions expected to follow. Residents are encouraged to continue monitoring local forecasts and advisories as winter weather remains active across Central New York.
