Bryson City, NC – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect through 7 a.m. Tuesday for higher elevations of Swain County, with a Winter Weather Advisory continuing for lower elevations, according to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg.
Forecasters say snow will persist through the night, with 4 to 10 inches expected above 3,500 feet, and localized totals exceeding 12 inches possible along the highest peaks of the Great Smoky Mountains. Valleys, including Bryson City and Almond, may receive up to 3 inches of accumulation.
Winds are expected to gust as high as 45 mph, leading to blowing snow, reduced visibility, and isolated power outages from downed branches and snow-laden power lines. The NWS warns that many mountain roads could become impassable overnight, particularly along U.S. 441 through Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Drivers are urged to avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve after sunrise. If travel is unavoidable, keep a flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of emergency.
Conditions are expected to slowly improve later Tuesday morning as snow tapers off and winds decrease.
