Anchorage, Alaska — A prolonged Winter Storm Warning remains in effect across large portions of interior and southcentral Alaska, bringing heavy snow, mixed precipitation, and hazardous travel conditions through Friday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Anchorage, the warning continues for the Western, Central, and Northern Susitna Valley through 9 p.m. AKST Friday. Snow accumulations of 12 to 24 inches are expected, with periods of rain and freezing rain possible from Talkeetna south, including along the Parks Highway. Snow is expected to be heavy and wet, increasing the risk of difficult travel.

In a separate warning, Thompson Pass and the Ernestine area are under a Winter Storm Warning from 3 p.m. Thursday through 9 p.m. Friday. Forecast totals range from 8 to 30 inches of snow, with ice accumulations up to two-tenths of an inch. Winds gusting up to 50 mph through Thompson Pass may reduce visibility to one-quarter mile or less due to blowing snow.

Forecasters said a warm, moisture-rich atmospheric river will move into the region, causing snow levels to fluctuate and precipitation to transition between snow and rain depending on elevation. Rain falling on snow-covered and frozen roads is expected to significantly worsen driving conditions.

Communities impacted include Talkeetna, Trapper Creek, Skwentna, Petersville, Broad Pass, 46 Mile, Tonsina, and Thompson Pass.

Travel may become very difficult across affected areas. The National Weather Service advises motorists to carry emergency supplies and check road conditions by calling 511 or visiting 511.alaska.gov before traveling.
