Duluth, Minnesota – Light but steady snowfall will move across the Northland this weekend, creating slick stretches on I-35 and Highway 61 as drivers head into Saturday night and Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, light and fluffy snow is expected from Friday evening through Sunday evening across far northern Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin. The heaviest accumulations will stay just east of the immediate Duluth area, with portions of the South Shore and Arrowhead region seeing between 2 and 4 inches by Sunday evening.

In Duluth and Superior, totals are generally expected to range from 1 to 3 inches, enough to coat I-35, US-53 and local city streets. Grand Marais and areas along Highway 61 could approach 3 to 4 inches, especially in elevated terrain. Farther inland toward Virginia and Ely, lighter totals closer to 1 to 2 inches are more likely.

Road temperatures will remain cold enough for snow to accumulate on untreated pavement, particularly overnight Saturday into early Sunday. While this system is not expected to produce heavy, wet snow, the lighter and fluffier consistency may lead to brief reductions in visibility if winds increase along the Lake Superior shoreline.

Drivers should allow extra travel time this weekend, especially during the overnight and early morning hours when plow operations may still be underway. Conditions are expected to gradually improve late Sunday, though additional light snow showers cannot be ruled out early next week.
