Springfield, IL – Central Illinois residents should prepare for multiple rounds of rain and thunderstorms starting late Saturday night, expected to bring significant rainfall and gusty winds. The heaviest rain will focus on areas west of Interstate 55, gradually spreading eastward. Drivers on I-70 and I-57 should be cautious, as rain and wind gusts up to 40 mph could create hazardous conditions through Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service, storms will likely bring 3-6 inches of rainfall to areas along the Illinois River Valley, including Galesburg, Peoria, and Bloomington, while parts east of I-57 may experience lighter rainfall initially, with heavier rain likely by Monday. Rain is expected to continue intermittently, with conditions gradually clearing by Wednesday. Wind gusts are forecasted to peak between 30 to 40 mph on Monday, especially in open areas and near highways.

Sunday’s forecast shows temperatures ranging from 63 to 73 degrees, with rain primarily impacting areas west of I-57 by evening. By Monday, temperatures will reach 76 degrees, but strong south winds could lead to isolated power outages or downed branches. Rain coverage expands eastward Monday night, affecting Champaign and other eastern Illinois regions.

The National Weather Service advises residents to monitor local weather updates and exercise caution on roads. Travel delays are possible in heavy downpour areas, with localized flooding risks where rainfall is most intense.

Looking ahead, temperatures will cool mid-week, with sunny skies expected by Wednesday. For now, keep rain gear handy, stay weather-aware, and plan for wet conditions as the system lingers over central Illinois.
