Des Moines, IA – A cold weather advisory has been issued for central and northern Iowa, starting early Sunday morning. Residents are urged to prepare for dangerously low wind chill values of -20°F to -30°F.

According to the National Weather Service, the advisory will be in effect from 3 a.m. to noon CST on Sunday. Similar conditions could persist into Monday and Tuesday mornings. The impacted areas include Des Moines, Waterloo, Ames, and surrounding communities.

Wind chills this severe can cause frostbite on exposed skin within minutes and increase the risk of hypothermia. Authorities recommend wearing layered clothing, hats, and gloves when venturing outdoors. Travel should be limited unless necessary.

Meteorologists warn that prolonged exposure during these conditions can pose life-threatening risks. Cold weather shelters are available in many cities for those in need.
