Sun Valley, Idaho – Snow will begin piling up in Idaho’s central and eastern mountains Monday night, creating slick highways and blowing snow before the Tuesday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Pocatello, a Winter Weather Advisory takes effect between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. Monday and remains in place until 5 p.m. Tuesday. The advisory covers the Sun Valley region, Stanley Basin, Frank Church Wilderness, Bear River Range, Island Park and surrounding highlands.
Snow totals of 4 to 8 inches are expected below 7,000 to 7,500 feet, with 8 to 14 inches possible at higher elevations, especially in the Bear River Range. Wind gusts between 40 and 50 mph could create blowing and drifting snow, sharply reducing visibility on exposed passes.
Travel through Galena Summit, Emigration Summit and mountain roads near Stanley, Ketchum and Island Park may become hazardous. Drivers should check 511.idaho.gov before departure and prepare for chain restrictions or reduced speeds.
The heaviest snow is expected overnight into Tuesday, with impacts likely during both the morning and evening commutes. Advisories remain in effect through late Tuesday afternoon.
