Sumter County, SC – Residents across Sumter County are being urged to use caution today as rare winter weather moves deeper into South Carolina, bringing snow, icy roads, and dangerously cold temperatures.

According to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Anthony Dennis issued a Weather Conditions Update Saturday after the National Weather Service reported that the area of expected major snow impacts has shifted farther south, with slightly higher snowfall totals now possible in Sumter County.

“Snow in the south is unusual and beautiful, but can be extremely hazardous,” Dennis said, especially as conditions worsen. He encouraged residents to avoid driving if possible during the weather event.

The Sheriff’s Office reminded drivers who must travel to reduce speeds, increase following distance, and begin slowing down earlier than normal when approaching stops, as icy roads can significantly reduce braking ability.

Chris Moore, Captain of the Patrol Division with the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, said additional deputies have been deployed and others are standing by in case conditions deteriorate or emergency responses increase.

“Enjoy the snow, but be careful,” Moore said, noting that temperatures are expected to drop to dangerously cold levels, particularly when wind chill is factored in.

Officials are also urging residents to check on neighbors, especially elderly individuals or those who live alone, as prolonged cold exposure can lead to serious injuries or medical emergencies.

The Sheriff’s Office reminded residents to call 911 in the event of an emergency and to continue monitoring official updates as conditions evolve throughout the day.
