Sumter, SC – A Lakewood High School student was stopped by security after attempting to bring a BB gun into the school Monday morning, according to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said the 16-year-old student’s bag triggered the metal detector alarm at the school’s entrance. During a search, the school resource officer discovered the BB gun inside the bag. The student was immediately detained and later released to their mother.

According to Sheriff Anthony Dennis, the case will be referred to Sumter County Family Court.
“We do not know the student’s motive for attempting to bring a gun to school, but we do know it was a foolish and illegal act,” Dennis said. “We are grateful the school’s safety protocols worked exactly as intended.”

No injuries were reported, and officials said the incident highlights the importance of routine security screenings at local schools.

The sheriff’s office confirmed that Lakewood High’s entry procedures will continue to include metal detection and random bag checks to maintain safety for students and staff.
