Rembert, SC – A Saturday afternoon argument in the Rembert community turned deadly when a 51-year-old man was fatally shot, according to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to a report of gunfire around 3:44 p.m. on October 18 along Louis Circle, where they found Rodney China, 51, deceased from apparent gunshot wounds.
According to investigators, witnesses said China and Quinshaun Dais, 38, were involved in a verbal dispute that escalated into a physical altercation. During the confrontation, Dais allegedly fired multiple shots, killing China at the scene.
The sheriff’s office said Dais was taken into custody immediately and charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. He is currently being held at the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center pending a bond hearing.
“This was totally avoidable and unnecessary,” Sheriff Anthony Dennis said in a statement. “It was an argument that could have remained civil. Instead, the argument turned into assault, and the suspect then resorted to deadly force.”
Dennis added that the incident appears isolated but serves as a reminder of the consequences of violence. “A life was lost, and families are forever changed,” he said. “People must learn to communicate and never resort to gun violence.”
The investigation remains ongoing.
