Summit County, OH – Property owners across Summit County are being urged to watch for potentially misleading mail after county officials issued a warning Wednesday about private companies offering paid title monitoring services.
According to the Summit County Fiscal Office, residents have recently reported receiving promotional letters shortly after recording a property deed. These mailings often suggest homeowners must pay a private company to monitor their property title for fraud — a service county officials say is already available for free.
Fiscal Officer Kristen M. Scalise, CPA, CFE, said the county provides no-cost title monitoring through its Property Record Alert system, which helps residents protect against property record fraud.
“The Summit County Fiscal Office offers a free alert system to help residents safeguard against property record fraud,” Scalise said. “There is no need to pay a private company for this service.”
Property Record Alert notifies users by email whenever a document is recorded using their personal or business information. These alerts allow property owners to quickly review filings and determine whether a transaction is legitimate or potentially fraudulent.
County officials emphasized that the promotional mailers are not sent by the Summit County Fiscal Office and that residents are under no obligation to enroll in or pay for any private monitoring service. While property records are public information — and can legally be used by companies for marketing — participation in paid monitoring programs is optional and unnecessary.
Residents can sign up for the free Property Record Alert system through the county’s self-service portal at https://summitcountyoh-web.tylerhost.net/web/ by selecting the Property Record Alert option.
Anyone who receives a notification that appears suspicious or fraudulent is encouraged to contact the Summit County Fiscal Office Recorder Division at 330-643-2712 or email summitreas@summitoh.net.
