According to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to Peach Drive in Coventry Township at approximately 4:20 p.m. Friday following a report of an assault inside a residence. A 59-year-old man told deputies he had been assaulted by a woman inside the home.
Investigators said the suspect was identified as Mary A. Gross, 59, of Coventry Township. According to the victim, Gross allegedly struck him in the face and later threw a hatchet at him during the confrontation. Deputies said the victim was able to safely exit the residence before Gross allegedly barricaded herself inside.
Authorities reported the victim sustained only minor injuries.
Due to the barricaded nature of the incident, the Summit County Sheriff’s SWAT Team and crisis negotiators were called to the scene. After more than two hours, Gross surrendered to deputies and exited the residence at approximately 6:55 p.m., according to the sheriff’s office.
Officials said she was taken into custody without further incident.
Gross is facing charges of Felonious Assault, a second-degree felony (F2), and Domestic Violence, a fourth-degree felony (F4). She was transported to the Summit County Jail, where she remains pending further court proceedings.
