Sullivan, ME – A Milbridge man died Tuesday morning after a single-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 1 in Sullivan, according to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department.

Officials said Gared L. Birdtail, 32, was driving a red 2010 Dodge Avenger westbound around 10:39 a.m. when his vehicle left the road near Taunton Drive. Investigators believe Birdtail was traveling at a high rate of speed when he failed to navigate a curve, causing the car to veer off the roadway, descend an embankment, and strike two trees before coming to rest on its roof.

Birdtail, who was the only occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash.

Detective Rick Canarr is leading the investigation, assisted by several Hancock County deputies and emergency personnel from Sullivan, Franklin, and Hancock Fire Departments, along with Versant Power, Maine DOT, and D.C. Towing.

Authorities said the cause of the crash remains under investigation, and Sgt. Marcus Downes is conducting a full crash reconstruction.
