Chicago, IL – Drivers across northern Illinois should prepare for potentially hazardous travel conditions Tuesday morning as light snow and icy roads are expected south of US-24. The National Weather Service (NWS) warns that single-digit temperatures will reduce the effectiveness of road treatments, raising the risk of accidents.
According to the NWS, a band of fluffy snow is expected to develop early Tuesday, between 3 a.m. and noon, mainly along and south of US-24. The snowfall may only accumulate to about one inch but could significantly impact visibility and road surfaces. Commuters are urged to check road conditions before traveling and allow extra time for their morning drive.
Wind chills will remain dangerously low, ranging from -10°F to -15°F during the early hours. These subzero conditions will persist through Wednesday morning, continuing the prolonged cold snap. Residents are advised to dress warmly in layers and limit outdoor exposure to avoid frostbite or hypothermia.
Looking ahead, temperatures will begin to thaw by Thursday and Friday, with highs reaching the upper 30s and low 40s. However, another blast of Arctic air is expected by next weekend, potentially bringing the coldest temperatures of the season and increasing the risk of ice jams on rivers.
