Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania – Bitter Arctic air continues to grip the Poconos early Saturday, creating hazardous conditions across northeastern Pennsylvania as dangerously cold wind chills linger through the morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, an Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect until 10 a.m. EST for Carbon and Monroe counties. Wind chills have dropped as low as 20 below zero, cold enough to cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes. Officials warn that prolonged exposure could also lead to hypothermia without proper protection.
The cold is impacting communities including Stroudsburg, Jim Thorpe, East Stroudsburg, and surrounding higher terrain, where winds are enhancing the bitter feel. Outdoor workers, early-morning travelers, and those without reliable heat face the highest risk. Vehicles may also struggle in the extreme cold, increasing concerns for motorists across the region.
Emergency managers urge residents to limit time outdoors, dress in multiple layers, and fully cover exposed skin with hats, gloves, and face coverings. Homeowners are advised to protect plumbing by allowing faucets to drip slowly and insulating exposed pipes. Pets should be kept indoors whenever possible.
For residents without adequate heat or shelter, officials remind the public that assistance is available by calling 211 to locate warming centers or emergency shelter. Conditions are expected to slowly improve later this morning, but residents should remain alert for additional cold-related advisories if dangerous conditions persist.
