Quad Cities, IA/IL — Strong winds blowing across newly fallen snow are creating dangerous travel conditions early this morning across portions of eastern Iowa, especially near and around Dubuque, according to the National Weather Service.
Per the latest IA-DOT assessments, travel is not advised in the Dubuque area prior to daybreak. Photos from highway cameras show snow-covered roadways, drifting across lanes, and sharply reduced visibility from blowing snow.
Hazards This Morning
- Strong winds are lofting fresh snow and creating drifts.
- Visibility drops are occurring in open rural areas, especially on north–south roads.
- Snow blowing back over treated roads is reducing traction and producing slick patches.
If travel is unavoidable, officials urge drivers to slow down, watch for sudden drifts, and allow extra stopping distance.
The hazardous conditions are expected to improve after sunrise as winds gradually ease and blowing snow diminishes.
