Sioux Falls, SD – South Dakota residents should prepare for a bitterly cold weekend as an Arctic front brings dangerously low temperatures and strong winds. Highs on Saturday will struggle to reach 12°F, with wind gusts up to 45 mph making conditions hazardous.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), northwest winds will intensify Friday evening, with gusts reaching 30 to 40 mph across the region. Wind chills could drop as low as -25°F by Sunday morning, significantly increasing the risk of frostbite for exposed skin. Travel along major roadways, including I-29, may be challenging due to strong crosswinds.

Saturday’s forecast calls for partly sunny skies, but the cold will persist. Overnight lows will plunge to -9°F, with winds remaining steady at 15 to 25 mph. Residents are urged to limit outdoor activities, wear layered clothing, and check on vulnerable individuals.

Sunday will bring slightly calmer winds but bitterly cold temperatures, with highs only reaching 3°F. The frigid weather will continue into Monday, with overnight lows nearing -11°F.

This extended period of cold highlights the importance of preparation. Ensure vehicles are equipped with emergency supplies, and keep pets indoors during the coldest hours. The NWS does not anticipate precipitation, but icy patches may develop on roads.

Be sure to monitor updated forecasts and take precautions against the extreme cold. The next warm-up isn’t expected until midweek.
