Charleston, WV – Scattered thunderstorms are expected across the region today, bringing the potential for damaging winds and localized flash flooding.

According to the US National Weather Service in Charleston, stronger storms could develop over western West Virginia, northeast Kentucky, and southeast Ohio. Meteorologists say these storms may produce damaging wind gusts capable of downing trees and power lines, while heavy rainfall could lead to flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

The Weather Service maps highlight a damaging wind threat extending through much of western West Virginia and into neighboring states. A separate advisory outlines a widespread flash flood risk, particularly in areas already saturated by recent rainfall.

Residents are encouraged to remain alert throughout the day, monitor weather updates, and avoid driving through flooded roadways. The Weather Service also advises securing outdoor items that could be blown away by strong winds.

Thunderstorms are most likely to develop during the afternoon and evening hours, with conditions gradually improving overnight. Officials stress that even brief but intense storms can create hazardous travel conditions.

Communities in Charleston, Huntington, Parkersburg, Beckley, and surrounding areas should prepare for delays, possible power outages, and sudden street flooding.
