Streator, IL – The Streator Fire Department has received a $112,363.80 federal grant to upgrade its environmental monitoring equipment, city officials announced Thursday.

According to the department, the funding comes from FEMA’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program. The Streator City Council formally accepted the grant on Wednesday, October 15, 2025. To qualify, the city will contribute a five percent local match of $5,618.19.

With the award, the department plans to purchase advanced air quality monitors, radiation detection devices, and a chemical identification tool known as a mass spectrometer. Officials said the new technology will replace aging and less reliable equipment while improving the department’s ability to detect environmental hazards during emergencies.

The Streator Fire Department has a strong history of securing federal funding for safety improvements. In 2020, the agency received an AFG grant for new SCBA breathing apparatus. Combined, Streator has been awarded more than $350,000 in FEMA support over the past five years.

Fire officials said the continued investment enhances both firefighter safety and community protection as the department responds to hazardous materials, fire suppression, and rescue incidents throughout the region.
