Streator, IL – A working smoke alarm alerted a resident to a fire in their apartment on the second floor of a multi-family building on North Otter Creek. The Streator Fire Department responded to the alarm at 1:04 p.m., dispatching Engine 2, Engine 3, Medic 8, and Chief 1, along with off-duty firefighters.
Firefighters encountered heavy smoke coming from a bedroom upon arrival. They quickly attacked the blaze with an attack hoseline, containing the fire within five minutes. A thorough search revealed no residents inside. The firefighters evacuated the smoke from three affected apartments and assisted residents with help from the American Red Cross.
According to the Streator Fire Department, nine firefighters extinguished the blaze and performed various support tasks. No injuries were reported. The fire caused moderate smoke and fire damage but was contained to the room of origin, thanks to the prompt alert from the smoke alarm.
The cause of the fire remains undetermined and under investigation.
