Dover, NH – A Dover man is facing multiple charges after allegedly assaulting a New Hampshire State Trooper during a confrontation Thursday afternoon in a parking lot near Route 16.

According to New Hampshire State Police, the incident happened around 2 p.m. Thursday along Dover Point Road, where a Trooper was parked while completing administrative duties inside a cruiser. Authorities allege a man pulled into the lot, exited his vehicle while holding a stick and a metal tool, and approached the Trooper in an aggressive manner while making verbal challenges.

Police said the situation allegedly escalated when the Trooper attempted to identify the individual, at which point the man allegedly became physical. Investigators allege the suspect punched the Trooper, tore part of the uniform, and attempted to gain control of the Trooper’s firearm during the struggle.

After what officials described as a prolonged encounter, the Trooper was able to regain control and place the suspect under arrest. The man was identified as Jonathan G. Newcomb, 53, of Dover.

Newcomb was transported to Wentworth-Douglass Hospital for treatment of minor injuries, while the Trooper was also evaluated as a precaution. Both have since been released.

Authorities allege Newcomb is now facing multiple charges, including felony criminal threatening, attempting to take a firearm from a law enforcement officer, and several misdemeanors such as driving while intoxicated, stalking, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, assault on a police officer, and criminal mischief.

Newcomb was taken to the Strafford County Jail for booking and is scheduled to appear in Dover District Court Friday at 10 a.m. The case remains under investigation.
