Birmingham, AL – Residents across central Alabama should prepare for two rounds of potentially strong storms heading into the weekend, according to the U.S. National Weather Service in Birmingham.
Forecasters say the first system will move through Friday afternoon and evening, bringing scattered thunderstorms with the potential for damaging winds up to 60 mph and hail up to the size of quarters. Storm activity is expected between 1 p.m. and 9 p.m. Friday, mainly along and south of Interstate 20, including Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, and Montgomery.
A second round of storms may redevelop on Saturday afternoon and evening, again bringing gusty winds and brief heavy rainfall. While the severe threat remains low, forecasters caution that isolated storms could still produce hazardous conditions.
“Stay weather aware through the weekend,” meteorologists advised early Thursday, urging residents to have multiple ways to receive alerts and access to sturdy shelter if storms intensify.
Highs both Friday and Saturday will reach the mid to upper 70s before cooler, drier air arrives Sunday.
