JOLIET – All westbound lanes on I-80 were closed for most of the day Friday after a multi-vehicle pileup including a commercial vehicle spilling a large amount of glue.

According to Illinois State Police District 5 Lockport, the crash involved five vehicles in total including a two semi-tractor trailer combinations, a White Mack Dump Truck, a Tow Truck and a 2011 Maroon Ford Taurus.

It happened at 8:20 am this morning on I-80 near Briggs Street when a driver of a 2016 White Freightliner Tractor Trailer driven by 50-year-old Ahmed Kulan of Portland, Oregon struck the rear of the Dump Truck. The collision caused a pileup on the interstate, including a commercial vehicle carrying the glue spilled out across all westbound lanes. After the collision, the Freightliner was partially engulfed in flames for a time.

Three individuals were transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries, including 32-year-old Antonio Almeida of Chicago and 57-year-old Eduardo Mejia of Oak Lawn who was the only passenger vehicle involved in the crash, along with a passenger riding with Mejia.

Illinois State Police issued Kulan a citation for Improper Lane Usage and Driving Too Fast for Conditions/Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident.

The roadway is expected to open sometime late Friday evening.
