Stevens Pass, Washington – Travel across Washington’s Cascade passes is becoming increasingly dangerous Friday as a powerful winter storm continues to bury Western Chelan County under heavy snow, with conditions expected to deteriorate further before improving late Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service in Spokane, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for Western Chelan County through Saturday afternoon. Additional snowfall totals of 1 to 2 feet are expected around Stevens Pass and Holden Village, while Stehekin could see another 3 to 6 inches. Wind gusts up to 30 mph are creating areas of blowing and drifting snow, sharply reducing visibility at times.
Stevens Pass is likely to see prolonged closures or significant delays as crews struggle to keep roadways clear. Washington State Department of Transportation officials warn that whiteout conditions could develop quickly, especially during heavier snowfall bursts Friday night into Saturday morning. Backcountry access near Holden Village is expected to be extremely limited.
Residents and travelers are urged to avoid non-essential travel. Those who must drive should carry emergency supplies, including food, water, and a flashlight, and check pass conditions frequently. Snow-loaded trees and gusty winds could also cause isolated power issues in higher elevations.
The storm is expected to slowly wind down late Saturday, though lingering snow showers and slick roads may persist into Saturday evening. Additional winter advisories remain possible as conditions evolve.
