Sterling, Colorado – Critical fire weather conditions are expected Saturday across the northeast Colorado plains, prompting a Red Flag Warning from the National Weather Service.

According to the National Weather Service Denver/Boulder, a combination of strong northwest winds, very low humidity, and dry fuels will create conditions favorable for rapid wildfire spread from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Wind gusts are expected to reach up to 35 mph, while relative humidity levels may fall as low as 14 percent.

The Red Flag Warning covers much of northeast Colorado, including areas near Interstate 76, U.S. Highway 85, and U.S. Highway 34, affecting communities such as Sterling, Fort Morgan, Greeley, Akron, and Julesburg. Open grasslands and agricultural areas are particularly vulnerable under these conditions.

Forecasters warn that any spark could quickly ignite a fast-moving fire, especially in open and rural areas where winds can spread flames rapidly. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and residents are urged to follow all local and state burn bans.

The National Weather Service advises avoiding activities that could generate sparks, including welding, dragging chains, parking vehicles on dry grass, or discarding cigarettes improperly. Even brief ignition sources could result in fires that are difficult to control.

Travelers along exposed roadways such as I-76 and US-85 should remain alert, as strong crosswinds may affect high-profile vehicles and any roadside fire could spread quickly toward road corridors.

Conditions are expected to improve Saturday evening as winds weaken and humidity levels recover. Until then, emergency officials urge heightened awareness for residents, farmers, ranchers, and outdoor workers.
