Phoenix, Ariz. – Thunderstorm chances are climbing across Arizona this week, with the greatest threat for damaging winds, flash flooding, and blowing dust expected Thursday and Friday. Drivers in the Phoenix metro and surrounding desert areas should prepare for sudden road hazards as storms strengthen late in the week.

According to the National Weather Service in Phoenix, storms Tuesday and Wednesday will be scattered across southwest and south-central Arizona, producing gusty winds and brief heavy rain. Conditions shift by Thursday, when deepening tropical moisture boosts the chance for more widespread coverage — up to 50% in the Valley. Forecasters warn that some storms could be severe, with downpours leading to localized flooding in low-lying streets and washes.

Flagstaff, Prescott, and Payson may see lighter impacts earlier in the week, but storms in Tucson and Globe could intensify alongside Phoenix as the late-week surge arrives. Blowing dust may create visibility issues on I-10 and U.S. 60, especially during evening commutes.

Residents are urged to charge devices, avoid driving through flooded roads, and secure outdoor items that could be blown around by strong winds.

Storm chances will linger into Friday night before conditions begin to dry out this weekend. Additional advisories may be issued if severe storms develop.
