Pennsylvania — Thick gray clouds hang low over central Pennsylvania this morning as mild air settles across State College. The air feels heavy and quiet, but conditions could change quickly by afternoon as powerful storms develop.
According to the National Weather Service in State College, severe thunderstorms are likely later today across central Pennsylvania. Some storms could produce damaging wind gusts and isolated tornadoes as a strong cold front pushes east. The greatest threat will develop from mid-afternoon through the evening hours.
Drivers traveling along Interstate 80, I-99, and Route 322 should prepare for rapidly changing weather. Sudden downpours could reduce visibility and create ponding water on roadways. Strong wind gusts may also snap tree limbs or scatter debris across roads.
Temperatures climb into the mid-60s this afternoon, adding energy to the developing storms. Winds from the south could gust near 35 mph, helping storms intensify across central counties including Centre, Huntingdon, and Mifflin.
Meteorologists say the same storm system causing blizzard conditions in the Upper Midwest is pushing a strong cold front through the East. Once the front passes tonight, temperatures will drop sharply.
Rain may quickly change to snow showers late tonight, especially after midnight. Some locations across the higher elevations could see 1 to 2 inches of wet snow before the system exits early Tuesday.
Colder air settles across the region Tuesday with highs near 30 degrees. Gusty winds will make it feel even colder, keeping wind chills in the teens.
Conditions gradually improve by Wednesday as skies brighten and temperatures recover slightly into the mid-30s.
