Pennsylvania – Snowflakes drift through dim morning light as bitter air settles over central Pennsylvania. Sidewalks crunch underfoot, and exposed skin stings within minutes as winter tightens its hold.
A Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect this morning for the State College area, with another advisory returning this evening through Friday morning. According to the National Weather Service, wind chills between 10 and 19 degrees below zero are expected at times, creating a serious risk for frostbite and hypothermia.
Light snow and flurries continue early today, keeping roads damp and occasionally slick. Even minor snowfall matters with temperatures hovering near single digits. As daytime heating remains weak, any melting will be limited. Once the sun drops, refreezing becomes likely, especially on untreated roads, sidewalks, and parking lots near Penn State’s campus and along Route 322.
Temperatures struggle to rise this afternoon, topping out near the low teens. Winds remain steady enough to keep wind chills near or below zero through much of the day. Conditions briefly improve Friday with sunshine, but the cold does not loosen its grip. Morning wind chills still hover near minus 5 before easing slightly by afternoon.
Saturday brings clearer skies and calmer winds, though highs only reach the upper teens. Another cold night follows, with lows near zero. Sunday offers modest relief, as highs climb into the lower 20s under partly sunny skies.
Meteorologists say this prolonged cold is part of a larger Arctic pattern stretching across the Great Lakes and Northeast. With nearly frozen lakes feeding cold air southward, winter hazards remain persistent rather than brief.
Limit time outdoors, dress in layers, and cover exposed skin. Check on neighbors and pets, and plan extra time if traveling during the coldest hours.
