Pennsylvania – Rain-darkened pavement reflects headlights this morning, but the shine will not last. Cold air presses in quickly, and that familiar winter edge returns just as temperatures tumble toward freezing.
The National Weather Service in State College warns that rain may mix with or change to snow later today. As temperatures fall below freezing tonight, untreated roads could become slick. Even light precipitation may freeze on contact, creating hazardous travel conditions into the late evening and early Thursday.
Across State College, Bellefonte, and surrounding Centre County communities, the risk centers on timing. Rain lingers into the afternoon, then colder air deepens after sunset. Drivers may encounter rapidly changing conditions on Route 322, Route 26, and local mountain roads. Bridges, shaded valleys, and elevated surfaces could ice first.
Snow chances continue into Thursday, though widespread heavy accumulation is not expected. Instead, intermittent snow showers may coat roads just enough to keep them slippery. Highs drop into the 20s, limiting daytime melting and allowing ice patches to persist.
By Friday, another round of snow showers becomes possible, especially during the afternoon and evening. While totals appear modest for now, repeated light snow combined with cold pavement raises concern for ongoing travel impacts. Gusty winds at times may further reduce visibility in open areas.
Looking ahead to the weekend, winter holds firm across central Pennsylvania. Snow showers remain possible Saturday, followed by colder, quieter weather Sunday. Overnight lows dip into the teens, reinforcing freeze-thaw cycles that can worsen black ice risks.
Plan extra time if traveling later today or tonight. Walk carefully on sidewalks and steps as temperatures fall. Seeing slick spots already? Let us know what conditions look like where you are.
