STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Drivers across central Pennsylvania should prepare for slick roads and sudden downpours as severe thunderstorms move in Sunday evening. The strongest storms could pack gusty winds, small hail, and heavy rainfall, threatening localized flooding and possible power outages into late tonight.
According to the National Weather Service in State College, storms are most likely between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m. Sunday, with rainfall totals up to an inch in spots. Travel along Route 322 near State College and I-80 through Clinton and Centre counties could be slowed by ponding water and reduced visibility.
Emergency officials urge residents to limit unnecessary travel and keep devices charged in case of outages. Outdoor plans should shift indoors before storms arrive, as lightning risk will remain elevated through late evening.
Conditions improve quickly Monday, with sunshine returning and highs near 76 degrees. Tuesday brings cooler air, topping out around 71, with only a slight chance of passing showers. The middle of the week trends seasonable, with dry air and highs in the low 70s, making it one of the most comfortable stretches of late August.
By Thursday and Friday, sunny skies and highs between 74 and 78 will dominate central Pennsylvania, providing a welcome break from the stormy weekend.
Warnings remain in effect for tonight, and additional alerts may be issued if storms intensify.
