Dickinson, ND – A North Dakota Highway Patrol K9 trooper and his police dog were involved in a traffic crash while assisting with road control at an active DUI crash scene in Dickinson.

According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, the trooper was working alongside Dickinson Police to block both southbound lanes of Highway 22 near 3rd Avenue West and 15th Street West when his marked patrol vehicle was struck from behind.

Authorities said the crash occurred at a relatively low speed but caused minor, functional damage to the patrol SUV after another vehicle hit the rear driver-side corner. The impact happened while emergency lights were activated and traffic control was already in place.

The driver of the other vehicle required medical attention at the scene. Investigators later determined the driver had an expired driver’s license and no active vehicle insurance. According to NDHP, the driver also told troopers they should not have been driving due to poor eyesight and reported not seeing the emergency lights until just moments before the collision.

Both the K9 trooper and the police dog were not injured in the crash, officials confirmed.

The incident serves as another reminder for motorists to slow down and remain alert when approaching emergency scenes, especially during early morning hours when visibility may be reduced.

North Dakota law requires drivers to move over or slow down when approaching emergency vehicles with flashing lights. Failure to do so can result in citations, fines, and serious safety risks to first responders working along roadways.

Drivers traveling through Dickinson were advised to use caution in active traffic control zones and to remain attentive to flashing lights, cones, and temporary lane closures.
