Stanton, Texas – A light earthquake struck 13 kilometers west-southwest of Stanton just before 1 p.m. CDT Monday, briefly shaking parts of West Texas but causing no immediate reports of damage or injury.

According to the Texas Seismological Network (TexNet), the quake registered a magnitude of 2.6 at a shallow depth of 4.2 kilometers. The tremor occurred at 12:58 p.m. local time and was automatically recorded by TexNet’s monitoring system.

Though relatively minor, the quake was shallow enough that residents in Midland and surrounding communities may have felt slight vibrations. As of Monday afternoon, no felt reports had been submitted to citizen science platforms, and local emergency services had not issued alerts.

Seismic activity in this part of Texas, especially near Midland, has increased in recent years, often linked to oil and gas operations. While a 2.6 quake is unlikely to cause structural damage, officials recommend residents note any new cracks in walls or foundations and report significant shifts to local authorities.

TexNet continues to monitor the area for aftershocks or additional seismic events. No further alerts have been issued at this time.
