Essex, Illinois – A quiet afternoon in Kankakee County took a terrifying turn when a stabbing occurred on Wednesday afternoon.

Responding to a distress call just after 1 pm from a residence on 13000 West Road, officers from the Kankakee County Sheriff’s Department discovered a woman with a stab wound to her lower back. The victim and the homeowner had been reportedly having lunch at a South Wilmington bar when they encountered the homeowner’s ex-girlfriend, 39-year-old Maria A. Serena from Gardner. The situation escalated when Serena allegedly followed them to the homeowner’s residence and stabbed the other woman before fleeing the scene.

Grundy County Sheriff’s police swiftly apprehended Maria A. Serena, charging her with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
