St. Louis, Missouri – Dry air and gusty winds are creating an elevated fire danger across eastern Missouri this afternoon, just as temperatures climb toward near-record highs around 86°F.

According to the National Weather Service in St. Louis, the combination of dry vegetation, low humidity, and gusty winds will increase the risk for rapid fire spread across much of the region. Winds will strengthen through the afternoon, making any fire difficult to control, especially in grassy and agricultural areas.

Communities including St. Louis, Columbia, and Quincy are expected to see the warmest temperatures, approaching or tying daily records. Open areas along I-70, I-64, and rural roadways face the highest fire risk where dry fuels are most exposed.

Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, properly dispose of cigarettes, and secure any equipment that could spark flames. Officials emphasize leaving any burning to professionals due to unpredictable fire behavior.

Rain chances return beginning later Tuesday and continue through Saturday, bringing multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms. While severe weather is not expected at this time, northeast Missouri and west-central Illinois could see the heaviest rainfall totals.

The elevated fire risk will diminish as moisture increases, but dry and windy conditions will remain a concern through the afternoon.
