ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Much of Missouri and southwest Illinois woke up under a Freeze Warning and Dense Fog Advisory early Sunday as subfreezing temperatures and limited visibility combined to create hazardous morning conditions. Temperatures dipped into the upper 20s and low 30s, marking one of the first widespread freezes of the fall season across the St. Louis metro, Columbia, Quincy, and Vandalia areas.

According to the National Weather Service in St. Louis, the Freeze Warning remains in effect until 8 a.m., with a Dense Fog Advisory continuing until 9 a.m. for parts of central and eastern Missouri and west-central Illinois. Visibility has dropped below a quarter-mile in some locations along I-70 and U.S. 61, while frost has coated cars and lawns across the river valleys.

The NWS warns that unprotected plants and outdoor plumbing could be damaged by the cold, and drivers should use headlights, reduce speed, and allow extra stopping distance until fog lifts midmorning.

After the chilly start, skies will clear with temperatures rebounding into the mid-50s by afternoon. A gradual warming trend is expected through midweek, bringing milder nights but continued cool, seasonal afternoons.
