St. Louis, Missouri – A scorching summer day across Missouri will give way to strong thunderstorms Friday evening, with damaging winds and heavy rain likely between 6 p.m. and midnight.

According to the National Weather Service in St. Louis, temperatures are expected to soar into the low to mid-90s, with heat index values around 100 across central and eastern Missouri. Thunderstorms are set to develop over northern Missouri and southern Iowa late this afternoon and push southward throughout the evening.

Cities like Maryville, Kirksville, and Quincy could see storms between 6 and 10 p.m., while areas along the I-70 corridor—including Columbia, St. Louis, and Jefferson City—are in line for potential severe weather between 9 p.m. and midnight. The main threats are damaging wind gusts and localized flooding from heavy rainfall.

Residents are urged to stay indoors during peak heat hours, limit outdoor activity, and remain alert to changing weather conditions this evening. Charge mobile devices and avoid travel if severe weather approaches.

Storms are expected to weaken as they move farther south overnight, but lingering showers and isolated lightning strikes could persist into early Saturday.
