St. Louis, Missouri – A dangerous blast of Arctic air is gripping the St. Louis region Monday morning, with wind chills dropping as low as 15 degrees below zero and creating hazardous conditions for drivers during the early commute. The intense cold is increasing the risk of icy patches on roads, especially on bridges, overpasses, and untreated surfaces.

According to the National Weather Service in St. Louis, the coldest wind chills are expected through late Monday morning across northeast Missouri and west-central to south-central Illinois, including the St. Louis metro area. Officials warn that frostbite can occur quickly in these conditions, and even short periods outdoors can be dangerous without proper protection.

Major routes such as I-70, I-64, I-55, and I-44 are being closely monitored as temperatures remain well below normal. Gusty winds may also reduce vehicle stability, particularly for high-profile vehicles. MoDOT and IDOT crews are urging motorists to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and keep emergency supplies in their vehicles.

Residents are advised to wear multiple layers, hats, and gloves, protect outdoor pets, and check exposed pipes. Wind chills gradually improve later today, but cold conditions persist into Tuesday, and additional cold-weather advisories could follow.
