St. Louis, Mo. – Slow-moving thunderstorms are causing minor flooding across parts of the St. Louis metro and into southwest Missouri Friday, with the threat expected to shift east through the afternoon. Water is covering some roadways in the hardest-hit neighborhoods, prompting warnings for drivers to avoid flooded routes.

According to the National Weather Service in St. Louis, the storms are progressing east at a sluggish pace, allowing heavy rainfall to repeatedly hit the same areas. The heaviest flooding is being reported in low-lying and poor-drainage spots. Emergency officials urge residents to never drive through water-covered roads, as even shallow flooding can stall vehicles or sweep them off the roadway.

Road impacts are most likely in parts of St. Louis, Jefferson, and Franklin counties, with the risk expanding into south-central Illinois later today. Commuters should expect delays, particularly along secondary roads and rural routes.

The flooding threat will diminish tonight as the storms weaken and move out of the region, but scattered showers may linger into Saturday morning. Additional advisories could be issued if rainfall intensifies.
