St. Louis, MO – A man armed with a large butcher knife was shot by police Wednesday morning after he allegedly advanced toward officers in a threatening manner.

According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, officers responded around 7 a.m. to a report of a man claiming a knife had been pulled on him. Upon arrival at the 5500 block of Wells, they encountered a man in his late 60s or early 70s holding the weapon.

Police say officers repeatedly ordered the man to drop the knife, but he instead moved toward them aggressively. As officers backed up while issuing commands, the man allegedly began running at them, prompting one officer to fire.

Emergency medical services transported the man to a nearby hospital, where he is in stable condition and expected to survive.

Authorities confirmed that the Force Investigation Unit is handling the case, and a knife was recovered from the scene. The investigation remains ongoing.
