St. Louis, Missouri – A significant winter storm is expected to impact the St. Louis region and much of the central U.S. this weekend, with snow likely to cause widespread travel disruptions across eastern Missouri and southwest Illinois.

According to a National Weather Service St. Louis update posted Friday morning, snowfall is expected to arrive in two waves, beginning Saturday morning through Saturday evening with lighter snow, followed by a heavier period from Saturday night into Sunday afternoon. The most impactful snowfall is expected Saturday evening through Sunday morning.

Forecasters say confidence is highest for heavier snow totals in southeast Missouri and southwest Illinois, while snowfall amounts farther north — including parts of central and northern Missouri — remain more uncertain. Despite the uncertainty, the NWS cautions that impactful snow is possible in all areas covered by the forecast.

The weather service emphasized that widespread travel disruptions are increasingly likely, particularly late Saturday and Sunday morning as snowfall rates increase. Roads may quickly become snow-covered, and visibility could be reduced during heavier bursts.

The NWS urges residents to reconsider weekend travel plans if possible, especially during the overnight and early morning hours when conditions are expected to be most hazardous. Additional forecast updates are expected as the storm track and snowfall distribution become clearer.

Drivers, commuters, and those with weekend plans are encouraged to closely monitor National Weather Service statements and local emergency alerts for the latest timing and impact information.
