ST. LOUIS, MO – A gray, wintry sky hangs over the metro this morning, and it’s only a preview of what’s coming. A fast-moving clipper system will bring a shot of snow by Saturday, followed by a bitter Arctic blast that could drop wind chills into the single digits across Missouri and southern Illinois by Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in St. Louis, light snow is expected to develop Saturday afternoon with a 40% chance of accumulation. Totals should remain around one inch, but locally higher pockets are possible east of the Mississippi. The bigger story comes behind the snow — a strong cold front sweeping in Saturday night will send highs plummeting from the 30s to the teens, with Sunday’s high near 16°F.

Drivers along I-70, I-64, and I-55 should prepare for slick patches and reduced visibility late Saturday. Refreezing on bridges and untreated roads could make early Sunday travel hazardous, especially near elevated ramps and shaded areas.

Meteorologists warn this is the leading edge of a larger Arctic push spreading across the Midwest and Great Lakes through next week — one that could keep temperatures 10–20 degrees below normal into mid-December.

5-Day Outlook (Dec. 11–15):

  • Friday: Mostly cloudy, high 39°F, low 23°F.
  • Saturday: 40% snow chance, high 28°F, low 3°F.
  • Sunday: Sunny, high 16°F, low 8°F.
  • Monday: Partly cloudy, high 40°F.
  • Tuesday: Mostly sunny, high 45°F.
