St. Louis, Missouri – A sharp cooldown is hitting Missouri within hours, replacing record-breaking heat with highs in the 50s today while setting the stage for fast-moving fire risks by Saturday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in St. Louis, temperatures shattered records Thursday, with St. Louis, Columbia, and Quincy all reaching 93°F—breaking marks that stood for more than a century. A cold front has now pushed through, dropping highs into the low to mid-50s across the state by Friday afternoon.

Cities along the I-70 corridor, including Columbia and St. Charles, will feel the biggest temperature swing, while areas near I-44 and I-55, including Rolla and Cape Girardeau, stay in the mid-50s under dry air. The cooler air may feel mild, but it comes with a tradeoff.

By Saturday afternoon, central, east-central, and southeast Missouri face elevated fire danger as dry air and gusty winds combine to rapidly spread flames. Communities from Jefferson City to Farmington are at higher risk, especially near open fields and dry vegetation.

Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, properly extinguish cigarettes, and keep vehicles off dry grass to prevent accidental ignitions.

The fire threat remains in place through Saturday evening, and additional advisories could be issued if winds strengthen.
