St. Louis, Missouri — Confidence has increased that light snow will move into the St. Louis region Thursday afternoon and persist into early Friday morning, according to the National Weather Service in St. Louis. While most locations are expected to see little to no accumulation, a few areas could pick up up to 1 inch of snow, particularly near and south of Interstate 70.
Forecasters say flurries and light snow showers will develop later Thursday, with coverage expanding into the evening hours. For much of the metro area, snowfall rates are expected to remain light, limiting accumulation on roadways. However, a small number of locations may experience steadier light snow, increasing the potential for slick spots overnight.
The best chance for measurable snowfall is expected near and south of I-70, including parts of the St. Louis metro, St. Charles County, and nearby sections of southwest Illinois. Even where accumulations remain minimal, bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads could become slick during periods of snow, especially late Thursday night and during the Friday morning commute.
Transportation officials recommend allowing extra travel time Thursday evening and early Friday, particularly for commuters using Interstate 70, I-64, I-55, and I-44. Drivers should be prepared for brief reductions in visibility and changing road conditions.
Temperatures during the event will remain cold enough for snow to accumulate on grassy and elevated surfaces, though widespread impacts are not anticipated. Road conditions are expected to improve later Friday morning as snow tapers off and crews address any problem areas.
This light snow event comes ahead of continued cold conditions across the region, with below-normal temperatures expected to persist into the weekend.
Residents are encouraged to monitor forecast updates, especially if travel plans include early Friday departures. Even small snowfall totals can lead to localized travel issues when combined with cold pavement temperatures.
