St. Louis, MO – As the Christmas season continues, Missouri is bracing for bitter cold, snow, and slick roads this weekend as an Arctic blast sweeps across the Midwest. Forecasters say temperatures will fall sharply into the teens statewide, with single-digit wind chills likely from Kansas City to St. Louis and icy patches expected along major interstates.
This same Arctic system has plunged much of the country into freezing conditions, even sending temperatures below normal across the South. Florida was under a Freeze Warning Friday morning — a rare signal of how widespread this cold air mass has become. For Missouri, the combination of snow, ice, and gusty winds will make travel especially dangerous for those heading out for Christmas gatherings.
State officials are encouraging all drivers to check vehicles and prepare emergency supplies before traveling. A proper winter car kit should include bottled water, snacks, blankets, gloves, jumper cables, and a flashlight. Drivers are also urged to pack a shovel, traction aids such as sand or cat litter, and a portable phone charger. Keeping the gas tank at least half full can prevent freezing and ensure warmth if stranded.
Motorists traveling on I-70, I-44, and I-55 should expect reduced visibility and slippery stretches, particularly during overnight hours. The Missouri Department of Transportation advises slowing down, allowing extra time, and keeping a safe distance from snowplows and emergency vehicles.
As Arctic air grips the Midwest, preparedness is the best defense. Taking a few minutes to ready your vehicle before hitting the road can help ensure a safe and warm trip during this year’s Christmas season travel rush.
