St. Louis, Mo. – Afternoon thunderstorms are expected to break the heat across Missouri over the next several days, bringing short bursts of heavy rain, strong winds, and occasional lightning.
According to the National Weather Service in St. Louis, isolated storms will form each afternoon through early next week. While not widespread, any storm that develops could quickly produce dangerous conditions, including wind gusts strong enough to down tree limbs and lightning strikes that threaten outdoor activities.
The St. Louis metro, along with surrounding counties including St. Charles, Jefferson, and Franklin, should plan for sudden downpours during peak afternoon hours. Motorists on Interstates 64, 70, and 44 could encounter slick roads and reduced visibility. Outdoor events and youth sports are also at risk of lightning delays or cancellations.
Residents are urged to seek shelter when thunder is heard, following the safety rule: “When thunder roars, go indoors.” The weather service advises keeping phones charged in case of power outages and limiting outdoor plans to morning hours when conditions are calmer.
Storm chances will linger through midweek, with the strongest cells expected in the late afternoon and early evening hours. More advisories could be issued if storms grow stronger or cluster together.
