Canton, NY – SUNY Canton has graduated six new peace officers through its newest training program this week, marking a key step for several former corrections officers transitioning into new roles across Northern New York. The class included two brothers who completed the program together, adding a personal milestone to the inaugural session.
According to SUNY Canton and the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, Academy Director Joseph Brown oversaw the six-week Peace Officer Course, administered at the request of the Sheriff’s Office. Five graduates were classified as special patrol officers supporting the St. Lawrence County Department of Social Services. Another graduate from Franklin County is now serving as a School Resource Officer.
Brown noted that the program differs from traditional police academies by attracting individuals who previously worked in corrections, many of whom share military experience or family ties to law enforcement. Brothers Jeffrey and Steven Forsythe of Gouverneur said their background in corrections drew them toward this next step.
“Our grandfather was a game warden, our father was a state trooper—both of us were in corrections, and we wanted to keep the law enforcement side of it rolling,” Steven said. The brothers shared that their father passed away before learning they would attend the academy, adding, “I think Dad would be proud of us.”
Both said the curriculum’s focus on community-based policing was a major reason they enrolled. “You have to build rapport with people and be more empathetic,” Jeffrey said. Steven added that the training directly shaped how he approaches public service: “In this position, you’re helping people. Some people really need help.”
Graduates now work part-time at Canton’s Social Services Administration Building, where they help monitor security and screen incoming visitors.
