Morristown, NY – A routine traffic stop in St. Lawrence County turned into a major narcotics arrest Tuesday after a sheriff’s K-9 alerted deputies to a large quantity of illegal drugs inside a vehicle.

According to the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, deputies stopped William D. Stivers on State Highway 37 in the Town of Morristown on Tuesday, December 10. During the stop, K-9 Shelly indicated the presence of narcotics, prompting a search of the vehicle.

Investigators reportedly recovered a significant amount of illegal drugs, including:

  • 29.2 ounces (approximately 1.8 pounds) of cocaine, with an estimated street value exceeding $80,000
  • 15.5 ounces of heroin, valued at more than $50,000
  • 7.7 ounces of fentanyl, estimated at over $25,000
  • Approximately 800 packets of Suboxone, valued at more than $15,000

Authorities said Stivers was charged with multiple felony counts, including Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th Degrees.

Stivers was arraigned in Morristown Town Court and remanded to the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility without bail, according to officials. All charges are allegations, and Stivers is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

The sheriff’s office noted the investigation was conducted with assistance from the New York State Police and the St. Lawrence County Drug Task Force.

Officials said the arrest reflects ongoing efforts to combat narcotics trafficking across the North Country, particularly along major travel corridors such as Route 37.
